Magdalena Reyes Bordeaux (“Maggie”) is a Senior Supervising Attorney with Public Counsel and manages Public Counsel’s Debtor Assistance Project (“DAP”), the largest bankruptcy pro se program in the country. DAP provides bankruptcy and bankruptcy-related bankruptcy legal assistance and representation to thousands of individuals and families every year.

Maggie has been practicing consumer bankruptcy law for over 15 years and has worked extensively with the Bankruptcy Courts for the Central District of California, Office of the United States Trustee, and private bankruptcy attorneys in developing and implementing ways to make the courts more accessible to pro se litigants. Maggie is an appointed 9th Circuit Lawyer Representative and is an adjunct professor at Loyola Law School. She is an Executive Board Member of the Central District Consumer Bankruptcy Bar Attorney’s Association (“cdcbaa”) and is an active member of the L.A. Country Bar Association Commercial Law & Bankruptcy DAP Committee.

Maggie has written numerous articles on consumer bankruptcy issues and is a frequent speaker at bankruptcy educational panels. She was on the cover of L.A. Lawyer Magazine for her article on expunging a fraudulent bankruptcy from the public record and was featured on KPCC for her work in this area. She has also received several awards recognizing her work and scholarship in the area of consumer bankruptcy law including being the recipient of the President Emeritus Henry J. Sommer Scholarship Award and the Thomas B. Donovan Public Excellence Award Recipient.

Maggie is a graduate of UCLA School of Law and is married to Clifford S. Bordeaux, a consumer bankruptcy attorney and fellow graduate of UCLA School of Law. Maggie and her husband live in La Crescenta with their 9 year old daughter, Maria Isabella Bordeaux (“Bella”).

Paul M. Uyehara is a Senior Attorney in the Federal Coordination and Compliance Section of the U.S. Department of Justice, Civil Rights Division, in Washington, DC.  He handles discrimination cases (under Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964), technical assistance, and outreach for the DOJ Courts Language Access Initiative and chairs the Limited English Proficiency Enforcement Committee of the Title VI Interagency Working Group.  Paul has over 25 years of prior legal services experience in Philadelphia, including some 15 years handling consumer bankruptcy cases under Chapters 7 and 13, was formerly a supervising attorney for the Consumer Bankruptcy Assistance Project, and maintains his NACBA membership.
