NACBA Past President Honored With Lifetime Achievement Award

brewer

RALEIGH (November 25, 2014) – The Bankruptcy Section of the North Carolina Bar Association (NCBA) has bestowed a Lifetime Achievement Award upon William E. Brewer, Jr., owner and principal of the Brewer Law Firm, The award was announced during a meeting of the Section’s 37th Annual Bankruptcy Institute held in Asheville on November 7-8.  The Lifetime Achievement Award recognizes a bankruptcy practitioner who, for not less than 25 years, has contributed to the betterment of the NCBA Bankruptcy Section and the profession, and who has set an aspiring example for those who follow.

Brewer, who resides and practices law in Raleigh, in addition to his activities with the North Carolina Bar Association, has been an active member of the National Association of Consumer Bankruptcy Attorneys (NACBA) since 1993.  He has been on the organization’s board of directors since 1997, served as vice president from 2007 – 2010, and was president from 2010 – 2012.  NACBA is the only national organization dedicated to protecting the rights of consumer debtors in bankruptcy.

Brewer stated:  “I am honored to receive the Lifetime Achievement Award from the North Carolina Bar Association.  During my thirty-seven year career as a licensed attorney in North Carolina, I consider it a privilege to have represented and helped thousands of deserving debtors regain control of their financial lives.  It has been a most rewarding way to make a living, and I have no intentions of quitting, despite the title of the award.  As the fourth recipient of this award, I am honored to join the prior recipients, Buzzy Stubs, Dick Hutson, and John Northen.  As the first debtors’ consumer attorney to receive this award, I acknowledge it on behalf of my dedicated colleagues throughout the state and nation who work tirelessly to improve the lives of their clients.  I would be remiss not to give special recognition to NACBA, in which I became involved early in my career as a bankruptcy attorney.  That organization has helped me and many others like me achieve our full potential as bankruptcy attorneys.”

Some of the key additional criteria for potential recipients of the NCBA Lifetime Achievement Award include:  demonstrated knowledge of Bankruptcy law and practice as a practitioner, including the very best work product; commitment to zealous but respectful representation of clients and adversaries; and demonstrated commitment to service to the NCBA Bankruptcy Section and Council and their community.

ABOUT WILLIAM E. BREWER, JR.

Brewer graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with an A.B. in Economics in 1973, and with a J.D. with Honors in 1976.  He served as law clerk to Judge R.A. Hedrick of the North Carolina Court of Appeals before beginning private practice in 1977, and later became certified as a specialist in consumer bankruptcy law by the North Carolina State Bar in 1993.  He was inducted as a Fellow in the American Colleges of Bankruptcy in 2009.  He is a graduate of South Lenoir High School, and is the son of Marsha H. Brewer and the late William E. Brewer, Sr. of Pink Hill, NC.

Bowling Green Lawyer Named KY State Chair

Local Attorney and Western Kentucky Univ. Faculty Member Maria Stewart to Liaise with
KY Bankruptcy Judges and Court Officials on Behalf of Washington, D.C.-based Trade Group

WASHINGTON, D.C. AND FRANKFORT, KY (November 18, 2014) – National Association of Consumer Bankruptcy Attorneys (NACBA) announced today that Maria C. Stewart will serve as its new State Chair of Kentucky. As NACBA Kentucky State Chair, Stewart will serve as the official liaison between the group’s leadership in Washington, D.C. and its member attorneys, bankruptcy judges and other court officials in the state, as well as serving as a primary contact for local media regarding consumer bankruptcy issues.

Serving approximately 3,500 members in all 50 states and Puerto Rico, NACBA (http://www.nacba.org/) is the only national organization dedicated to serving the needs of consumer bankruptcy attorneys and protecting the rights of consumer debtors in bankruptcy.

Maria Stewart’s practice is located in Bowling Green where she serves as Community Relations Chair on the Bowling Green-Warren County Bar Association Board of Directors. In addition to practicing law, Stewart is a Western Kentucky University faculty member. In her free time, she and her husband, Jason, enjoy kayaking on a creek or river in Kentucky or Tennessee.  Stewart received her Juris Doctor from Samford University’s Cumberland School of Law and her undergraduate degree from Troy University.

Reacting to her nomination as the new NACBA state chair, Maria Stewart said: “NACBA plays a very important role in protecting debtors in bankruptcy. It is an honor and a great opportunity to be part of the organization’s leadership.  The best bankruptcy attorneys are really good listeners. This is the only way to gather the information that you need to help your client. When I meet with a client, the most important part of the process is sitting down to listen to their personal stories, and determining the series of events that resulted in them needing bankruptcy relief.”

NACBA Executive Director Dan LaBert said: “Our leadership team is dedicated to continuing our mission in Kentucky to help to protect the rights of families in financial distress at a grassroots level. Our national membership is supported by a strong network of state chairs appointees.  Maria is a longstanding NACBA member and will make an excellent state chair in Kentucky.  We look forward to working closely with her to represent bankruptcy attorneys and their important policy objectives across a wide range of issues.”
